Multi-Overlapping Gel-Filled Silicone Encapsulated Prosthetics

Vancouver FX Studio announces a intensive new course covering the advanced techniques required for multi-overlapping silicone prosthetics creation in TV and film production. This method, created by legendary special effects makeup artist Dick Smith, has become an “industry standard” for these types of makeup.

Since then artists all over the world have developed multi-piece appliance makeups using his advanced techniques. Multi-piece appliance makeups have provided a way to deal with complex movement and blending using the newest style of realistic silicone gel-filled appliances. While makeup artists all over the world have developed the actual methods which best suited their needs for “breaking down” the clay sculpture into the component parts they needed, Dick’s standard method still remains the same. All these advanced techniques and more will be covered in this intensive prosthetic FX class.

Over 10 weekly classes TV & Film Industry special FX artist and Instructor Dallas Harvey will teach students how to life cast the face of a live model, and correct the cast for creating “gel-filled” encapsulated silicone prosthetics. Students will then learn how to create a full face set of “snap” molds from the cast and set it up for creating a multi-overlapping prosthetic character design.

During the class students will learn how to professionally sculpt and texture a full character face, break the sculpts down into separate snap molds. Students will then mold their designs in resin and create the final silicone “gel-filled” encapsulated prosthetic face set. In addition, the instructor will teach the class how to use professional silicone paints and learn how to apply a multi-overlapping face prosthetic in the correct order on a live model.

At the beginning of the course students will be assigned a final project to create a character make-up while incorporating their newly created silicone prosthetics into the design. Outside of class students have the option to create wardrobe, props and other character embellishments to create a final look. On the final day of class students will bring in a live model of their choice to create the final character they have designed and using all the techniques learned in the class. This course will consist of lectures, demonstrations, and lots of HANDS-ON learning.

All clay, sculpting, molding, silicone and prosthetic materials included in tuition fee. For the final assignment students will be required to provide their own model and all body safe industry standard make-up, adhesives, airbrushing or body painting supplies, costumes/wardrobe/wigs, nails and other accessories. Airbrushes and compressors will be provided for student use during the final character exam. On the day, after the final character is complete the studio will provide a professional photoshoot for each student with digital images provided of their creation to use in an FX portfolio.
