In this comprehensive eight-week Sunday course, students will learn professional sculpting and finishing techniques to create their own custom-designed character prosthetic. This hands-on class covers every step of the process, from concept to completion, focusing on the intricacies of prosthetic design, molding, and troubleshooting common complications.

Students will gain expertise in mixing, casting, and baking prosthetics using foam latex, along with learning advanced pre-painting techniques to give their prosthetics a realistic finish. The course also includes practical lessons on how to apply and safely remove prosthetics from a live model, preparing students for real-world FX applications.

Perfect for beginners and those looking to advance their skills, this course offers a deep dive into the art of prosthetics in a professional, supportive environment. No previous sculpting experience is required to take this course. All clay, molding materials and a set of basic sculpting tools are provided in the tuition cost.

Description

In this Foam Latex Prosthetic FX class, students will learn professional techniques to sculpt, mold, and finish a custom-designed character prosthetic. The course covers the full process, including proper plaster molding, troubleshooting design complications, mixing, casting, and baking prosthetics in foam latex. Students will also explore pre-painting techniques and prosthetic makeup application for a polished, realistic effect.

Designed for beginners, this hands-on class provides plenty of practice opportunities along with live demonstrations and lectures by the instructor. All products, materials, and a basic set of sculpting tools are included in the tuition, so students can focus on learning. It’s recommended to bring a notepad for taking notes and a camera to document your progress throughout the course. Upon completion, students will receive a certificate of completion, signed by the instructor.

No prior experience in makeup or prosthetic sculpture is required—just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

Dallas Harvey – Founder & Lead Instructor, Vancouver FX Studio

Dallas Harvey is a special effects artist with expertise in both practical and digital mediums, with over 15 years of experience in special FX for TV & film production. His career includes roles as lead special effects designer, prosthetic sculptor, key special effects makeup artist, and puppeteer on a wide range of film, television, and music video productions.

As a former instructor and author of the Digital Make-Up Design curriculum at Blanche Macdonald Centre, Harvey has also made significant contributions to the industry beyond his FX studio.

He curated the IMATS Vancouver Make-Up Museum from 2012 to 2014 and has been featured in Make-Up Artist Magazine, where he also contributed to the Lab Tech section with insightful columns.

Harvey’s FX work includes designing and creating special effects for Zombies: A Loving History, The Exorcist: Season 2, Alien Ore and most recently Never Let Go starring Halle Berry.
