Intermediate – Foam Latex Prosthetics

In eight weekly Sunday classes, instructor Dallas Harvey teaches students professional sculpting and finishing techniques to create a custom designed character prosthetic, focusing on the process of molding, prosthetic design complication troubleshooting, mixing, casting, and baking prosthetics in foam-latex. Students will also learn techniques to use when pre-painting prosthetics as well as the best techniques to use when applying and removing the prosthetics from a model.

Description

In the Intermediate – Foam Latex Prosthetics class, instructor Dallas Harvey shares with students professional sculpting and finishing techniques to create a custom designed character prosthetic. Students will learn techniques and acquire skill in properly molding a prosthetic in plaster, troubleshooting prosthetic design complications, mixing/casting/baking prosthetics in foam latex, pre-painting prosthetics, and prosthetic application and removal.

This course is largely based with hands-on learning and also includes live demonstrations and lectures by the instructor. All prosthetic materials and sculpting tools needed for this course are included in the course tuition fee, including sculpting tools and a face cast for the student to keep! It is encouraged to bring a notepad to take notes and a camera to document your progress as you learn. Upon finishing the course, students will receive a certificate of course completion signed by the instructor.

      NOTE: No prosthetic FX experience is necessary prior to taking this course.

Instructor

Vancouver FX Studio Founder and Lead Instructor, Dallas Harvey, is a special effects artist who works with both practical and digital mediums, with over 15 years of digital concept and CGI experience, Harvey has been credited with roles including lead special effects designer, key makeup effects artist, and puppeteer on many film, television, and music video productions.

In addition to taking role as author and previous-instructor of the Digital Make-Up Design curriculum for Blanche Macdonald Centre, Harvey was also responsible for curating the IMATS Vancouver Make-Up Museum 2012-2014 and featuring some of his work in Make-Up Artist Magazine, including written columns in the magazine’s Lab Tech section!

Most recently, Harvey designed special effects for The Exorcist Season 2 for Fox TV network including puppeteering custom builds, creating realistic props and silicone body duplicates, blood rigging, dental acrylic teeth creation, as well as custom sculpting fabrication and concept design.

About The Instructor

Dallas Harvey – Instructor & FX Artist

Dallas Harvey is a special effects artist who works with both practical and digital mediums. He has over 15 years of digital concept and CGI experience and has been lead special effects designer, key makeup effects artist and puppeteer on many TV, Film & Music video productions.

His special effects make-up designs have been published numerous times in the world-wide publication Make-up Artist Magazine. In addition, Harvey is a twice published author in the Lab Tech section of the magazine, and was curator of the IMATS Vancouver Make-up Museum 2012-2014. Harvey has also authored and instructed the Digital Make-up Design curriculum for Blanche Macdonald Centre. In 2015 he was a LEO Award nominee for Best Make-up in a Short Drama for Telefilm Canada sci-fi production Gord’s Brother.

Most recently Harvey designed special effects for The Exorcist Season 2 for Fox TV network puppeteering custom builds, creating realistic props, silicone body duplicates, blood rigging, dental acrylic teeth, custom sculpting fabrication and concept design.
