Over the course of eight weekly Thursday night sessions, students will learn professional sculpting and finishing techniques to create a custom-designed silicone front-face character prosthetic. This class covers every step of the process, including concept design, sculpting, molding, troubleshooting design challenges, and casting in professional-grade silicone. Students will also be trained in advanced pre-painting techniques, as well as best practices for applying and removing prosthetics on a live model.

In this comprehensive eight-week Thursday night course, students will master professional sculpting and finishing techniques to create a custom-designed silicone front face character prosthetic. The class covers every stage of the process, from concept design and advanced prosthetic sculpture to troubleshooting, molding, and casting in high-grade silicone. You’ll also learn essential skills in mixing and tinting silicone, pre-painting prosthetics, and proper application and removal methods on a live model.

This hands-on course is taught through a combination of live demonstrations and instructor-led lectures, ensuring a practical, immersive learning experience. All necessary products, materials, and tools are provided as part of the tuition. Students are encouraged to bring a notepad for taking notes and a camera to document their work throughout the course. For the final project, students must supply their own model, along with body-safe make-up, adhesives, airbrush or body-paint supplies, wardrobe, wigs, nails, and any other accessories needed for the final make-up application.

On the last day, students will apply their prosthetics in a final make-up session, followed by a professional photo shoot with their model, courtesy of the studio. Graduates of the course will receive a certificate of completion signed by the instructor.

Professional Sculpture Design Techniques & Tools
Learn how to use industry-standard sculpting tools and materials to design intricate prosthetics. This section covers the best practices for working with specialized clays, sculpting tools, and texture-building techniques essential for lifelike prosthetic creations.

Sculpting for Dynamic Movement: Old Age & Realism
Explore the nuances of sculpting for dynamic facial movements, with a focus on creating realistic aging effects. This module dives into sculpting techniques that enhance the expression of wrinkles, skin sagging, and other natural aging features while ensuring proper functionality when worn.

Character & Creature Concept Design
Develop original character or creature concepts, starting from rough sketches and progressing through detailed 3D design. You’ll learn how to bring your imaginative ideas to life, balancing creativity with anatomical accuracy and practical application for prosthetics.

Moldmaking: Creation of Resin Prosthetic Molds
This section covers the fundamentals of mold-making for prosthetics, focusing on creating durable resin molds from your sculpted designs. You’ll learn mold-making techniques that capture fine detail, ensuring high-quality final silicone pieces.

De-Molding: Preparing Mold for Silicone Prosthetic Creation
Understand the proper steps to safely and efficiently de-mold your sculpture and prepare it for silicone casting. You’ll learn techniques to avoid common mold damage or imperfections and how to clean and prep molds for multiple uses.

How To Tint Silicone for Skin Translucency & Mix Ratios
Learn the science of tinting silicone to achieve natural skin tones with the right amount of translucency. This section will guide you through silicone mixing ratios and pigment blending techniques that give your prosthetics a realistic, lifelike appearance.

Creating & De-Molding “Gel-Filled” Silicone Appliances
Discover how to create silicone appliances with gel-filled interiors for added flexibility and realism. This module walks you through the process of creating soft, gel-filled prosthetics, perfect for adding realistic movement to certain parts of the prosthetic.

Pre-Painting Silicone Prosthetics: Airbrush & Hand-Painting Techniques
Master the art of pre-painting silicone prosthetics using both airbrushing and hand-painting techniques. Learn how to layer colors for realistic skin tones, textures, and details, ensuring a professional finish for your prosthetics.

Silicone Character Make-Up Application & Photo Shoot
In this final module, you’ll apply your completed silicone prosthetics to a live model, learning the proper adhesive techniques for a secure, realistic fit. The course culminates in a professional photo shoot, allowing you to showcase your work with high-quality images.

Dallas Harvey – Founder & Lead Instructor, Vancouver FX Studio

Dallas Harvey is a special effects artist with expertise in both practical and digital mediums, with over 15 years of experience in special FX for TV & film production. His career includes roles as lead special effects designer, prosthetic sculptor, key special effects makeup artist, and puppeteer on a wide range of film, television, and music video productions.

As a former instructor and author of the Digital Make-Up Design curriculum at Blanche Macdonald Centre, Harvey has also made significant contributions to the industry beyond his FX studio.

He curated the IMATS Vancouver Make-Up Museum from 2012 to 2014 and has been featured in Make-Up Artist Magazine, where he also contributed to the Lab Tech section with insightful columns.

Harvey’s FX work includes designing and creating special effects for Zombies: A Loving History, The Exorcist: Season 2, Alien Ore and most recently Never Let Go starring Halle Berry.
