Over six Wednesday evening sessions, you’ll learn the fundamentals of sculpting, molding, and casting while creating your very own latex mask. The course also introduces you to essential FX painting techniques, allowing you to bring your mask to life with realistic finishes.

Sculpt and cast your own high-quality latex mask, perfect for your portfolio.. or just for fun! No previous sculpting experience is required to take this course. All clay, molding materials and a set of basic sculpting tools are provided in the tuition cost.

Vancouver FX studios teaching facility is located just off Commercial Drive and easily accessible by transit or vehicle.

Course Outline

Introduction to Sculpting Tools & Materials:

– Overview of basic sculpting tools, specialized clays, and materials.
– Introduction to human anatomy and character design for masks.

Building the Foundation:

– Learning proper techniques for blocking out the shape and features of your mask.
– Creating a basic form for a fantasy, creature, or human character mask.

Detailing & Refining:

– Refining the sculpted features of your mask.
– Adding texture and intricate details to bring your character to life.

Molding Techniques:

– Step-by-step guide to molding your clay mask for casting.
– Understanding different molding materials and troubleshooting common issues.

Latex Casting & Mask Removal:

– Pouring and casting your mask in rubber latex.
– Safely removing your mask from the mold for final touches.

FX Painting & Finishing:

– Introduction to painting techniques using FX paints to add realistic colors and details to your mask.
– Final touches and showcasing your completed latex mask.

Dallas Harvey – Founder & Lead Instructor, Vancouver FX Studio

Dallas Harvey is a special effects artist with expertise in both practical and digital mediums, with over 15 years of experience in special FX for TV & film production. His career includes roles as lead special effects designer, prosthetic sculptor, key special effects makeup artist, and puppeteer on a wide range of film, television, and music video productions.

As a former instructor and author of the Digital Make-Up Design curriculum at Blanche Macdonald Centre, Harvey has also made significant contributions to the industry beyond his FX studio.

He curated the IMATS Vancouver Make-Up Museum from 2012 to 2014 and has been featured in Make-Up Artist Magazine, where he also contributed to the Lab Tech section with insightful columns.

Harvey’s FX work includes designing and creating special effects for Zombies: A Loving History, The Exorcist: Season 2, Alien Ore and most recently Never Let Go starring Halle Berry.
