In this one in-depth Saturday workshop, students are taught how to get a head start with new emerging technology by taking advantage of VR sculpting program, Oculus Medium, to use created concepts for a professional way of pitching ideas and prototypes to clients and productions! Students will learn how to quickly design multiple concepts, create revisions on the fly, and how to paint virtually airbrushed images for sculpting practical prosthetics or film props.

In the Digital Sculpting workshop, students are taught the ins and outs of virtual concept design using VR sculpting program, Oculus Medium. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience using the program, learn innovative techniques to create concepts on an exceptional program in a professional manner, and how to apply those concepts to presenting ideas and prototypes to clients and productions. Students will also learn to think and work sharper by honing techniques to help quicken the design process and easily create revisions on the fly.

This workshop is largely based with hands-on learning and also includes live demonstrations and lectures by the instructor. All products, materials, and tools needed for this workshop are included in the tuition fee. It is encouraged to bring a notepad to take notes and a camera to document your progress as you learn. Upon finishing the workshop, students will receive a certificate of completion signed by the instructor.

NOTE: No previous computer or digital design experience is necessary prior to taking this workshop.

Instructor

Vancouver FX Studio Founder and Lead Instructor, Dallas Harvey, is a special effects artist who works with both practical and digital mediums, with over 15 years of digital concept and CGI experience, Harvey has been credited with roles including lead special effects designer, key makeup effects artist, and puppeteer on many film, television, and music video productions.

In addition to taking role as author and previous-instructor of the Digital Make-Up Design curriculum for Blanche Macdonald Centre, Harvey was also responsible for curating the IMATS Vancouver Make-Up Museum 2012-2014 and featuring some of his work in Make-Up Artist Magazine, including written columns in the magazine’s Lab Tech section!

Most recently, Harvey designed special effects for The Exorcist Season 2 for Fox TV network including puppeteering custom builds, creating realistic props and silicone body duplicates, blood rigging, dental acrylic teeth creation, as well as custom sculpting fabrication and concept design.

About The Instructor

Dallas Harvey – Instructor & FX Artist

Dallas Harvey is a special effects artist who works with both practical and digital mediums. He has over 15 years of digital concept and CGI experience and has been lead special effects designer, key makeup effects artist and puppeteer on many TV, Film & Music video productions.

His special effects make-up designs have been published numerous times in the world-wide publication Make-up Artist Magazine. In addition, Harvey is a twice published author in the Lab Tech section of the magazine, and was curator of the IMATS Vancouver Make-up Museum 2012-2014. Harvey has also authored and instructed the Digital Make-up Design curriculum for Blanche Macdonald Centre. In 2015 he was a LEO Award nominee for Best Make-up in a Short Drama for Telefilm Canada sci-fi production Gord’s Brother.

Most recently Harvey designed special effects for The Exorcist Season 2 for Fox TV network puppeteering custom builds, creating realistic props, silicone body duplicates, blood rigging, dental acrylic teeth, custom sculpting fabrication and concept design.
